Why Can’t People Maintain the Weight Loss? The Missing Link

I started in this journey by wanting to lose weight. I am 5’3” and I weighed 130 lbs. Although it doesn’t sound like overweight, I didn’t FEEL good about myself and that is one of the most important things to reflect on. Do you FEEL good about yourself? When you look at a mirror, do you ADMIRE yourself? Do you LIKE your body? Do you aspire to CHANGE your body for better health? I think I know the answers to these questions for most of you reading this.

So, let’s talk about the question, SHOULD I FOCUS ON LOSING WEIGHT? And the answer to that is “IT DEPENDS”. I know lot of you rolled your eyes when you read that, but think about it…. Most people cannot keep their weight off after losing is because they DON’T know what they are really after by losing weight. They think they should lose weight to look better for others, to avoid being self-conscious about yourself while wearing that pretty dress in the next wedding, and mostly because everyone says losing weight should be the goal when your BMI is too high.

Losing weight requires “change”. Humans are habitual creatures and we all know that. We don’t just change – there has to be either inspiration or desperation in order to change and sustain that change. In my opinion, this is exactly why you are not able to keep your weight off, because you are changing (losing weight) because of external motivating factors and not really because of an inspiration. When you are inspired, you will ONLY reach for the best thing for your body and mind. I PROMISE you.

Let’s talk about desperation. Desperation happens when you have a serious disease and an extreme condition that forces you to change. So, if you must change, why wait for desperation to show up unexpectedly.

So, why are we not inspired to make a shift?

The word inspired comes from being in spirit. When this happens, your mind expands in every direction. Its like an idea getting hold of you and driving you rather than you getting hold of an idea and forcing it. If you’re inspired, getting out of bed in the morning is rarely (if ever) a push. Here are a few things you might want to say to yourself to inspire yourself to eat better and make better choice:

  1. To be lean, you have to be mean. Learn to say “NO”
  2. Think of food as “healthy or unhealthy” not “good or bad”
  3. Weight is not everything. Feeling is.
  4. I have willpower to make myself look “however” I want to look like
  5. I am going to make progress no matter how small – think in “nano” scale
